Plug up holes that pests, like mice, can get into with steel wool. Rodents are unable to chew through the steel fibers. All openings bigger than a quarter inch need to be stuffed. These animals can squeeze through extremely small openings.

Keep your home as clean as possible. Even though this will not keep pests away, you at least will not be giving them an incentive to stick around. Many pests can smell food from a good distance away. If you want to do whatever you can to reduce your pest problem you should be diligent in keeping your house tidy.

You need to always have an inspector take a look at a house before you decide to buy it. You might be able to spot some signs of pest damage, but it is hard to recognize which type of pest you are dealing with until you actually spot some bugs or rodents into the home.

Use a spray for outdoor perimeters to make insects avoid entering your house. Try spraying your foundation, porch, steps, doors, and windows. Always spray the pesticides in the cracks that you see. Seal these areas with caulk or another appropriate filler.

Go through the foundation and roof of your house to ensure that there're no cracks or holes that pests can get into. If you find any, make sure you seal them up as soon as possible. Try to avoid using typical caulk as they usually can chew through this. Your best bet is to use something made with copper or mesh.

Make your own inexpensive ant traps using boric acid and sweet liquid. Mix a couple of tablespoons of boric acid powder into a cup of honey, molasses, or simple syrup. Pour the mixture into bottle caps or shallow plastic lids. Place these traps in areas where you have seen ants, but keep them out of the reach of children and pets.

If you have problems with moles in your yard, set up a trap. You will know a mole is present by the raised portion of your yard that's been tunneled under. Use a shovel to collapse a section of the tunnel (approx. 4"). Set up a mole trap over the collapsed portion and wait for the mole to tunnel through and try to fix the collapse.
